Download this sample .sdlxliff file (Trados file)
We have prepared a sample file just for the sake of this demo. You can download the sample file from here. The file type is .sdlxliff (Trados file). If you don’t have Trados, that is still okay you will not need it in this demo. (But as a professional translator it is highly recommended you do have Trados…)

Go to the QA tab, click on the “Check Ongoing Translation” button.
The result is pretty much straight forward.
As you can see XBench will list up all the errors it found in the file. The errors are listed by Error Description with the source and target segments next to it so that you can check what is the actual issue.
In this example the errors are of 5 types:
– Untranslated Segment
– Inconsistency in Target
– Inconsistency in Source
– Numeric Mismatch
– Key Term Mismatch
In this example the errors are of 5 types:
– Untranslated Segment
– Inconsistency in Target
– Inconsistency in Source
– Numeric Mismatch
– Key Term Mismatch
One neat feature is that by clicking and selecting an error segment XBench actually highlights what could be wrong there.
Let’s go through each one of them:
– Untranslated Segment: obviously the segment has no translation, i.e. the target segment is empty.
– Inconsistency in Target: same source segment has been translated differently.
– Inconsistency in Source: different source segments have been translated the same.
– Numeric Mismatch: numbers in source and target do not match.
– Key Term Mismatch: because we have selected the “Key Terms” feature XBench picks up keywords and make sure the translation is consistent across the document.
See how XBench picked up the word “keyterm” (which doesn’t exists actually, yes 🙂 ) as a Key Term? XBench has spotted that keyterm should be translated sa “mot-clé” but it can’t find it in the target segment as it was replaced by “mot-clef”.
Important to note also that the first line shows in which file and at what segment the error is (the number after the file name in parenthesis is the corresponding segment number).

How to add a dictionary in XBench for spell-checking?
It is very simple to add dictionaries in XBench. This will be necessary if you want to perform a spell-check on the bilingual file.
Here is how:
In the “Tools” menu select “Spell-Checking Dictionaries”, select the right language then click on the “Install” button. That’s it!
You can run again the QA, but this time with the spell-check on.

You have performed your first XBench translation check. This is a powerful tool and should always be use as final check before delivery. Â But never forget, this is just a mechanical check and cannot judge the overall quality of the translation, it only informs on consistency etc. and helps “debugging” your work.

Yes. If you buy more years using the same email account that you used for your initial purchase, the additional years bought will be added to the years that you already have.
I manage a multi-user environment. How do I buy licenses for my team?
All Xbench licenses are multi-user. When you make your first purchase, your subscription years will be initially assigned to the email used in your purchase. Using the Control Panel, you will be able to specify all emails authorized by your account. Purchased subscription time will be distributed evenly among all authorized users. For example, if you manage a team of 3 and buy 9 subscription years, the Control Panel allows you to assign 3 subscription years to each member of your team. Also, teams can also switch their license to a domain mode license to ease user administration and reduce costs. You can find more information about domain mode licenses in this blog post.

No. Simply use the Control Panel to remove the email of your former employee and their remaining time will be distributed evenly among the rest of the emails authorized by you.
I would like to buy one license for a freelance translator that works often for us. How do I do that?
In the Control Panel you can authorize any email to use Xbench. Just add your vendor's email to the list of authorized users and you are all set. The remaining subscription time will be recalculated to accommodate the new license.

FAQs for Xbench 2.9
Is Xbench 2.9 really free of charge?
Xbench 3.0 Download Full
Yes, Xbench 2.9 can be used free of charge. The Xbench 3.0 licensing program does not apply to Xbench 2.9.
Can I use Xbench 2.9 for work?
Although Xbench 2.9 is distributed as freeware, its license allows you to use it to help you with your translation work, either if you are a freelance translator, an employee at a translation agency or an in-house translator at an end client.
Can Xbench 2.9 work with Unicode characters?
Xbench 2.9 is a non-Unicode application, and as such, it does not handle strings internally in Unicode. This means that to avoid or mitigate character corruption issues, you need to set your system locale to the best fit for the languages you will be working with. Xbench 3.0 is the first version that supports Unicode.
Is there support available for Xbench 2.9?
You can still file issues with this form. However, please note that Xbench 2.9 development is frozen because all efforts are focused on the Xbench 3.0 Unicode code base, so any further updates to Xbench 2.9 for fixes and enhancements are unlikely.
